Over the past two years, Jules Kounde has developed into one of the best right-backs in world football – this is despite the fact that he is a natural centre-back. He was moved out of the position under previous Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez, and went on to do his own thing.

However, Kounde understands that he still has a lot of work to do in the post, as he told “The Bridge” podcast (via Marco).

“Sometimes people do not understand that we have our criteria and goals in a game. I am the one who knows best what I am capable of doing on a field. In my case, when I play full-back I am judged for things which are not my strengths. I understand that I have changed positions and that it requires other things.

Kounde also opened up about his feelings about being a professional footballer. He admitted that he gradually began to fall out of love with the game in recent years, as other interests came into his life.

“It's difficult because I have many interests. I want my family to be safe. I would also like to help others. I don't see myself being a coach. But I see that player-coach relationships are very interesting. It's too much stress. Being a coach is very complicated.

“I would be lying if I told you that I love football as much as before. Before it was my career, now it is my job. When I started, my life outside the field was secondary.”

Football may just be a job now for Kounde, but it's one he excels at. He is a very valuable player for Barcelonaand will surely continue to be so for many years to come.
