Aston Villa fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat away to Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup this afternoon.
A wonder strike from Eveliina Summanen on the 60th minute condemned them to defeat and left Villa rueing their missed chances.
Robert de Pauw made a host of changes to his team that beat Crystal Palace 3-2 last weekend as he brought in eight fresh faces.
Noelle Maritz’s cross fall to Kenza Dali inside the box on the fourth minute but she was unable to properly connect with her shot and her low effort was easily collected by Eleanor Heeps.
Bethany England teed up a shot from distance for the home side minutes later, but Sabrina D’Angelo was equal to the effort.
Katie Robinson created some space inside the final third on the 17th minute, but her shot was dragged just wide of the target.
Sabrina D’Angelo was called into action just before the break as she pulled off a terrific save to keep out a close-range shot from Bethany England.
Villa were presented with a chance to take the lead on the stroke of half-time as Dali won the ball back inside the final third and charged with it goal wards but she selfishly squared it to Ebony Salmon who’s shot flew over the target.
Adriana Leon had the ball in the back of the net for Villa four minutes after the restart as turned home a cross from Robinson, but the offside flag was raise.
11 minutes later it was the hosts who took the lead in spectacular fashion as Summanen blasted a 40-yard shot into the far top corner of goal.
D’Angelo got down to palm a shot from Hayley Raso around her goal post on the 63rd minute as she ensured the score remained 1-0.
Dali pulled the trigger on a shot from distance in hope of drawing her side level on the 71st minute but her effort was collected by Heeps.
The defeat leaves Villa currently sat in second place of Group E, three points behind leaders Spurs, with their final group stage fixture against Charlton Athletic next month being all to play for.
