Southampton hit an unwanted Premier League record by conceding a 'ridiculous' goal to Liverpool

Southampton topped the table in an ugly statistic after conceding a sloppy goal at home to Liverpool.

Southampton Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy passed a ball to Mateus Fernandes, but the midfielder quickly lost possession in his own area.

It was Flynn Downes' turn who attempted to clear his lines although his effort fell into the path of Szoboszlaiwhich quickly made it 1-0.

Speaking about the defense on talkSPORT, former Arsenal player Perry Groves said: “It was basically so bad it was ridiculous.”

As a result, Southampton have made the most errors that led to goals against the opposition of any other Premier League team this season (seven).

Liverpool's goal marked a poor start for the Saints, who have already lost nine of their opening league games.

However, Southampton responded as half-time approached when Stuart Armstrong scored the rebound from his saved penalty.

Referee Samuel Barrott awarded the penalty after Andy Robertson was deemed to have fouled Tyler Dibling.

The decision was reviewed by VAR and although it appeared that contact had occurred outside the area, the decision stood.

“The referee's sanction for Robertson's tackle on Dibling was checked and confirmed by the VAR, which considered that there was no conclusive evidence that the contact had occurred outside the area,” reported the Premier League Match Center in X.

Liverpool dominated the first half, enjoying 67.3 percent of possession and taking 11 shots, seven of them on goal.

However, they were unable to maintain their lead before the breakaway against the team that is in last place in the Premier League.
