'He has my full support': Gary O'Neil backs José Sa after shocking scenes in which Wolves goalkeeper confronts fan
Wolves manager Gary O'Neil has backed goalkeeper Jose Sa after he was detained by security for confronting his own fans.
Sa confronted the fans at Molineux during his team's 4-2 defeat to Bournemouth Saturday as tensions rose.
Wolves were trailing 3-1 against Bournemouth at the time of the incident, which took place just before half-time.
Sa, visibly frustrated, walked around the goal he had been defending and began pointing and shouting at a member of the crowd.
Security quickly intervened, stepping in to prevent him from getting any closer.
Shortly afterwards, a supporter wearing a Wolves shirt was seen being escorted out of the venue by security staff.
It was a difficult match for the Wolves goalkeeper, who conceded four goals throughout the match, three of them from penalties.
To make matters worse for Sa, it was his foul on Bournemouth's Evanilson that led to two of the three penalties.
The nightmarish performance and subsequent confrontation with a fan were mentioned to the coach. Gary O'Neil after the game.
And despite not commenting on the scandal in the stands, he did cling to his player who is part of a team in a 'difficult situation'.
O'Neil said: “I think situations like this that we find ourselves in, as I say, have heightened emotions and responses.
“José Sa has my full support, anything he needs from me he will get. He has my full support.
“The passes he received today he shouldn't have received. The first one can be eliminated much faster. Of course you can.
“None of the players have anything but my full support. We face this difficult situation together.”
Wolves came into the Bournemouth game in 17th place in the Premier League, just above the relegation zone on goal difference.
Despite their precarious position, they had entered the match after two consecutive victories.
But the pressure has continued to mount on coach O'Neil, as his team has picked up just nine points from 13 games so far this campaign.
Despite a series of difficult games at the start of the season, fans booed throughout as Wolves fell back to 18th position in the league and the relegation zone.
However, they are still just one point away from safety and O'Neil has tried to maintain a positive attitude despite Saturday's defeat.
He said: “We are four unbeaten in the Premier League against tough opposition.
“We've had a bad day, but it's important not to overreact to a game that got away from us very, very early.
“Especially when we have two more big games in the next 10 days.”
Wolves travel to Goodison Park to face off Everton in their next Premier League clash on Wednesday night.
They then face a trip to West Ham next Monday night.
