Michail Antonio could be out for at least a year as West Ham star undergoes surgery after serious car accident
West Ham have confirmed that Michail Antonio has undergone surgery following his car accident.
The club confirmed that it was in a stable condition on Saturday and we have now followed up with another update on the Hammers striker in a statement on Sunday.
It said: “West Ham United can confirm that Michail Antonio has undergone surgery on a lower limb fracture following a road traffic accident on Saturday afternoon.
“Michail will continue to be monitored in hospital over the next few days.
“Everyone at the Club wishes Michail a speedy recovery and would like to express our sincere thanks to the entire football family for the enormous support shown since yesterday's news, as well as extend our sincere thanks to the emergency services and first responders who Michail was treated immediately after the incident and the medical team that continues to assist him in his recovery.
“The Club will provide further updates when appropriate.”
Antonio's recovery period has not been clarified, however, it is expected to be long with the guardian suggesting the player could be out of action for at least a year.
Images of Antonio's wrecked Ferrari in Essex, near the home of West Ham owner David Sullivan, emerged on social media on Saturday.
The Hammers striker was trapped inside his vehicle for almost an hour as emergency services worked tirelessly to free him.
He was airlifted to a hospital in central London.
Antonio's ex-wife Debbie, 34, traveled from her home in Manchester to be at Antonio's bedside.
A statement from Essex Police on Saturday said: “We were called shortly after 12.50pm on Saturday December 7 to Coppice Row, Epping, following reports of what is believed to be a single vehicle collision involving a Ferrari.
“Emergency services attended and the driver was taken to hospital.
“The vehicle has been recovered and we are no longer at the scene. Our Highway Policing Unit will carry out an investigation.”
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said it responded to the scene of the crash in Epping on Saturday afternoon and freed a man trapped in his car.
“Crews were called at 1.02pm this afternoon following reports of a road traffic collision involving a car,” he said.
West Ham expressed their thoughts and prayers after the news broke, with many other clubs doing the same.
Premier League players also sent their support to Antonio.
The Jamaican international has made 323 appearances for West Ham since signing from Nottingham Forest in 2015.
He also played for Reading and Sheffield Wednesday, among other clubs, during his career.
Antonio has played 15 games so far this season in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing one assist.
