West Ham prepare to submit bid to sign Jonathan Burkardt

western ham United are reportedly preparing to make a formal offer to sign FSV Mainz 05 star Jonathan Burkardt, according to transfer journalist Ekrem Konur.

The Hammers decided to strengthen the number nine position by signing Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund last summer. But the German has not been able to adequately serve his new club during the first half of this season due to injury problems. He is now back to full fitness and even scored against Leicester City earlier this month.

After Fullkrug, the east London club have Danny Ings and Michail Antonio as the other two centre-forward options. But the latter has suffered a serious accident and, as a consequence, will not be available to play football for the next few weeks.

Additionally, he will turn 35 next year and his current contract will expire at the end of this season. On the other hand, Ings' current contract also expires next summer and he will turn 33 next year.

So it seems that West Ham have started looking at options to refresh the centre-forward position and writing about unknownKonur claims the Hammers have considered Burkardt as a serious option.

Burkardt to West Ham:

Clubs from the Bundesliga, Serie A and La Liga are also interested in signing him, but Julen Lopetegui's side are looking to outdo the competition by submitting a £14m bid.

Konur wrote:

“West Ham United are considering an initial bid of €17 million for Mainz's 24-year-old German striker Jonathan Burkardt. “The Bundesliga, Serie A and Spanish clubs are closely monitoring the German's situation.”

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a productive campaign this season, scoring 10 goals and registering just one assist in 13 Bundesliga games so far.

He has scored six goals in his last four league games and now the striker will face Bayern Munich this weekend. Therefore, it remains to be seen how he performs against the German record champions. Burkardt has helped Mainz move into the top half of the table, just two points off the European spot.

Following his promising performances in the Bundesliga, he was selected to play for Germany in the October international break and even played against Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Netherlands.
