The Premier League explains why Marc Cucurella was sent off after the final whistle in Chelsea's victory against Brentford
Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella received two yellow cards in a matter of minutes and was sent off following their 2-1 win over Brentford.
Cucurella was sent off by referee Peter Bankes after the final whistle, meaning he will miss the Blues' trip to Everton next Sunday.
He will be available to face Shamrock Rovers in the European conference league But on Thursday.
Cucurella will then be able to return to league action against Fulham on Saint Stephen's Day.
Before injury time, Cucurella had not even been booked by Bankes before three frantic minutes ensued for the defender.
After being booked for a foul on Fabio Carvalho, he received a second yellow card at the end of the match.
Cucurella's second booking came for a shove on Bees striker Kevin Shade as he received his first red card in the Premier League.
The PGMOL said in a statement: “The referee showed a second yellow card to Cucurella for adopting an aggressive attitude. Schade was also cautioned for the same offence.”
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca commented on the post-match sending off and revealed what the referees told him.
“I didn't see the second yellow card,” Maresca admitted.
“The referee said the second yellow card was for a bad attitude. There are things we can do better.”
The red card came after Cucurella's first goal of the season to open the scoring in the closing stages of the first half.
That goal was also the 26-year-old's first Premier League goal for Chelsea in his 60th league appearance.
Meanwhile, it was his first in the competition since scoring for Brighton against manchester united in May 2022.
Maresca was impressed with the goal and his left-back's performance and said: “It's all about position. You have to be in the right position and if you are you will have a chance.
“We worked with Marc in this game to arrive and be in the right position. We are very happy.
“It is not something normal because he is not a great full-back. We worked during the week to find this type of solution and we have been lucky.”
Nicholas Jackson He scored Chelsea's second goal before Bryan Mbuemo scored Brentford's goal.
With the victory, the Blues close the gap with the Premier League leaders. Liverpool just two points.
However, the Reds have a game in hand following the postponement of the Merseyside derby last weekend.
