Mikel Arteta will not tolerate any defamation of Charity Shield.
He Arsenal The manager was eager to put the trophy back in his silverware account after it was overlooked by a journalist during his latest press conference.
Arteta spoke to the media before his team's match. Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Crystal Palace, a match that presents a great possibility of lifting another trophy as city of manchester and Chelsea are already eliminated.
However, when discussing the Gunners' chances, one journalist was instantly corrected when he said it would be Arteta's second Arsenal trophy since their 2020 FA Cup victory.
“The shield of charity also twice, right? So there are three,” he said. “We need more, we want more and we want the big ones, that's for sure.”
The charity, or Community Shield, has long divided public opinion in England as it does not have the prestige of Super Cups in other parts of Europe and the world.
However, to say that Arsenal were pointless certainly undermines their achievements, considering their opponents.
In 2020, the Gunners brought down a Liverpool Team at the peak of their power under Jurgen Klopp, winning on penalties after Takumi Minamino canceled out Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's first goal.
Then in 2023, his victory was just as impressive. Against the current European treble champions, Man City, another penalty victory occurred after Leandro Trossard's late equalizer in added time. Cole Palmer had put Pep Guardiola's team ahead.
Those wins mean Arteta has three winners' medals as Arsenal manager but, as he said, his focus is clearly on “the big ones”.
In Europe, his best results have been a Europa League semi-final and a Champions League quarter-final, but in the Premier League he has been closer to maximum glory.
In the 2022/23 season, Arsenal finished runners-up in the Premier League, five points behind champions City, and were even closer last time, again just two points behind City.
This season things look even more complicated with Arsenal six points behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.
However, Arteta does not feel any pressure when it comes to the Carabao Cup, as he explained: “The pressure is to be at a big club or win the biggest trophies. This is what we want to do.”
But he added: “We want to win and do everything possible to win it.”
