Borussia Dortmund remain unbeaten in 2024, and a large part of that is down to the upturn in form of Marcel Sabitzer. The Austrian, who has played 540 minutes across six Bundesliga games this calendar year, has been given a new role under Edin Terzić which has seen the player flourish.
Held to a 1-1 draw in Wolfsburg despite taking the lead through Niclas Füllkrug, Sofascore gave Sabitzer a 7.4 rating, Dortmund’s best player on the afternoon. Although lining up in a double-pivot alongside Emre Can, Sabitzer played a far more advanced role, operating in the final third for the most part.
Sabitzer showcased his vision and passing range, finding Marco Reus who assisted Füllkrug for Dortmund’s goal. Not only that, the Austrian misplaced just one pass (50/51, 98%) and had 62 touches of the ball, imposing himself more on the game.
It’s been a similar story for much of 2024. In Sabitzer’s six Bundesliga games, he’s played 10 key passes. It’s also something Terzić has noted of late (via RN): “I think Marcel Sabitzer has had a great season since he’s been with us. He’s done really well and is often involved in goals and preparations.”
With games against PSV, Hoffenheim and Union Berlin coming up, Sabitzer will be looking to continue his current form. With every passing game, he’s looking more and more like the €19m player Dortmund paid Bayern Munich in the summer.
