PLAYER RATINGS | Union Berlin 0-2 Borussia Dortmund – Ian Maatsen shines

Borussia Dortmund remain fourth following their 2-0 win against Union Berlin at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei on Saturday afternoon. It’s a vital win for Edin Terzić’s side after last weekend’s defeat against Hoffenheim, and more-so after RB Leipzig’s 4-1 win at Bochum, meaning just one point separates the two teams in the race for the final Champions League spot.

Karim Adeyemi returned to the squad in place of the suspended Donyell Malen, and repaid Terzić’s faith as he opened the scoring with his first Dortmund goal of the season. Ian Maatsen also scored his first Bundesliga goal in the 90th minute after bundling through the Union defence.

It was always going to be a difficult game for Borussia Dortmund against a Union side that were unbeaten at home in their last six league games prior to today’s defeat.

It was a busy afternoon for Union’s Frederik Rønnow in goal, saving five shots while Jerome Roussillon was the standout performer for the hosts.

As for Maatsen, on loan from Chelsea, the Dutchman was lively for Borussia Dortmund. The 21-year-old had 111 touches of the ball, two of which were in the opposition box. The left-back was excellent at progressing the ball with six passes into the final third, but was also solid defensively with nine defensive actions, six recoveries and one block, clearance and interception.
