In this weekly feature, hosts of the Gegenpressing podcast Stefan Bienkowski and Manu Veth face off with their predictions for the forthcoming Bundesliga matchday fixtures. It’s three points for a correct score and one point for a correct result. Who will come out on top at the end of the season?
Manu’s Game of the Week: Werder Bremen vs Borussia Dortmund
I covered Werder Bremen’s season on the Gegenpressing Substack this week and it is, therefore, just fitting that their game against Dortmund is my match of the week. And this promises to be a good game. Werder are actually just behind Dortmund in fourth place in the Rückrunden Tabelle (second half of the season standings) and are in the running for seventh place overall, which is likely going to be enough to qualify for Europe this season. On top of that, Werder have actually played some good football and if their win against Bayern Munich is anything to go by they could be a very difficult opponent for Borussia Dortmund this matchday.
Manu’s Predictions:
Stuttgart 2-0 Union Berlin; Bayern Munich 2-0 Mainz; RB Leipzig 3-0 Darmstadt; Gladbach 2-2 Köln; Augsburg 2-1 Heidenheim; Werder Bremen 1-1 Borussia Dortmund; Bochum 2-1 Freiburg; Eintracht Frankfurt 1-1 Hoffenheim; Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 Wolfsburg
Stefan’s Game of the Week: Bayer Leverkusen vs Wolfsburg
My game of the weekend has to be the one that caps off the entire matchday, as Bayer Leverkusen welcome Wolfsburg to the Bay Arena. Niko Kovac’s team are certainly far from formidable on paper – as just three points won in their last five matches would suggest – but the Wolves haven’t given up entirely just yet and within that recent run of form was a narrow defeat to Stuttgart, a draw away to a Frankfurt side that have lost just once at home this season and a 1-1 tie with Borussia Dortmund that Kovac’s team should have won. Indeed, Wolfsburg are no pushovers and against a Leverkusen team that have had to dig deep to win games recently, they could cause more problems that many Bundesliga fans would be willing to predict.
Stefan’s Predictions:
Stuttgart 2-1 Union Berlin; Bayern Munich 2-1 Mainz; RB Leipzig 2-0 Darmstadt; Gladbach 1-1 Koln; Augsburg 1-0 Heidenheim; Werder Bremen 1-2 Borussia Dortmund; Bochum 1-1 Freiburg; Eintracht Frankfurt 2-2 Hoffenheim; Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 Wolfsburg.
