“They won't get away with it” – Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski is worried about the next generation of footballers

Football has changed in the last 5-10 years, with the mental aspect now taking on a lot of prominence for players and clubs. The social media revolution has played a big part in this, with footballers now exposed more than ever to possible criticism from supporters and onlookers.

Robert Lewandowski recognized this, and fears it could have a detrimental effect on younger players. Speaking to TVP Sport (via MD), spoke about the situation, which could end up affecting some of his current partners, including Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi.

“Those who surround you must be prepared for what will happen if things get worse. Now there is another generation, there is Instagram, there is social media, it is even more difficult. Because they will not escape from it, they will not stay in four walls. This is the challenge of football: if you can mentally endure ten, twelve or more years. The pressure is enormous and few people will be able to cope with everything.”

Lewandowski also talked about Cubarsi specifically, and sang his praises.

“It's been a long time since I've known a central defender, especially at his age, who can pass the ball in triangles so calmly. He's also a great person.”

There is definitely extra pressure on younger players today, especially with the introduction of social media. Barcelona they are a club that could be affected more than most by this as they have a host of promising youngsters coming through the La Masia academy.
