Unai Emery was keen to move on quickly after Aston Villa lost to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs took the spoils at Villa Park on the back of a strong second half, closing the gap between the teams in the Premier League to two points.

Villa’s head coach put things in perspective after a difficult day in B6.

“We will analyse this match and we will be disappointed, but we have to understand the Premier League is 38 matches and we are on game 28 and we are fourth,” he said.

“The first half was the plan we had, and we tried to keep it for 90 minutes but we conceded two goals in the second half from two mistakes.

“It was difficult, even more after the red card. We have to try to understand we’ve played 28 matches and we’re fourth. We need to move on.”

Villa now have ten Premier League matches remaining as the season builds to a climax, with plenty to play for in the Premier League and Europa Conference League.

Emery said: “We are not a contender to be in the top seven and we are. We are playing against a team who are more in contention than us.

“We are struggling against Newcastle and Manchester United and today against Tottenham. The positive thing is we are in front of them because we are being consistent.

“That is the way we have to try and keep. We need to react quick and focus on Thursday here against Ajax in the Conference League because we have to be motivated and excited in this competition.

“We need our supporters. Today they supported us and helped us but we still need to be strong together because we will need them.”
