Newcastle are hopeful Anthony Gordon's knee injury is not as serious as initially feared, talkSPORT understands.

The full-back continues to be evaluated by the club's medical service after suffering a problem during the match 3-2 defeat against Chelsea on Monday night.

With just 36 minutes into the game, Gordon fell to the ground and looked somewhat uncomfortable when the Newcastle physiotherapist came in to treat him.

Speaking to talkSPORT after the game, coach Eddie Howe said: “It was a surprise. Obviously he went down… it's a knee problem.

“It's not clear how serious it is, but it's not looking good. But it really increases our injury problems.

“I don't think there was a mechanism or a time when he felt the injury, the pain just appeared, so let's wait and see.”

One man who will be watching with interest is England manager Gareth Southgate.

Southgate was present at Stamford Bridge on Monday night to catch a glimpse of the winger, among others, ahead of this summer's game. Euro 2024 tournament.

talkSPORT understands Gordon is not currently considered an injury doubt for the Euros, although the Magpies are still awaiting an official forecast.

Gordon has become a candidate for a seat on the plane after scoring ten goals and registering seven assists for Newcastle this season.
