Julian Nagelsmann has today confirmed that Manuel Neuer will be Germany’s No. 1 goalkeeper at Euro 2024. The Bayern Munich stopper is currently sidelined with a muscular strain and has withdrawn from the friendlies against France and the Netherlands, but that hasn’t affected Nagelsmann’s decision.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of tomorrow’s game against France, Nagelsmann said: “We have made the decision. Manu got injured but it’s just a strain, so I won’t be changing my decision.

“I also said in a conversation with Marc [André ter Stegen] that I’m happy that we have to world class goalkeepers. I explained to him that it was important that he was there for the two games. An injury can happen at anytime for both.”

Neuer hasn’t played for Germany since the 2022 World Cup where he featured in all three group games before suffering a leg break on a skiing holiday post their elimination from the tournament.

The 37-year-old was expected to make his comeback against France on Saturday night but suffered a thigh injury during training, which means that Barcelona’s ter Stegen will now start in goal.

Neuer, should he be fit, will play against Ukraine and Greece in Germany’s final two friendlies before Euro 2024.
