Since it was confirmed that Thomas Tuchel would be departing Bavaria at the end of the campaign, there has been plenty of speculation surrounding who will become the next head coach of Bayern Munich. However, Lothar Matthäus has brought a new name to the table.
It is no secret that Der Rekordmeister are hoping to convince current Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso to return to the Allianz Arena. The former Bayern midfielder is currently on track to guide the Werkself to an unprecedented treble, as his side remain unbeaten in all competitions this season.
However, there is a belief within the Leverkusen camp that the Spaniard will remain at the BayArena for another season. Which has, therefore, left the record champions looking elsewhere.
Brighton & Hove Albion have been enjoying yet another stellar season under Roberto De Zerbi, catching the eye of those at the Säbener Straße. It is understood that contact has been made between Max Eberl and the Italian; however, Alonso remains the number one target.
Regardless, in a press conference prior to Germany’s clash with the Netherlands on Tuesday, Lothar Matthäus suggested that former Schalke head coach Ralf Rangnick should be considered by Bayern:
“He has actually always done a successful job and played attractive football. He relies on young players, which is where Bayern want to go. Ralf Rangnick has to be on this list that Max Eberl has put together.”
Nevertheless, it is highly unlikely that Rangnick and Bayern would be compatible. With the amount of authority that the current Austrian head coach often demands, it is almost guaranteed that Uli Hoeneß would not consider Rangnick for the job.
As well as this, other than a brief and rather underwhelming stint in charge of Manchester United, Rangnick has been out of club management since 2019. With Bayern looking to return to the top of German football and leapfrog Leverkusen, it would undeniably be a rather unexpected appointment from the Rekordmeister.
