“A player of his stature is never ruled out” – River Plate VP addresses links with Athletic Club veteran
Last week, Iker Muniain announced that he will leave Athletic Club at the end of his contract, thus ending his 15-year stay in the first team. The 31-year-old will leave as a legend, especially after helping Los Leones win their first Copa del Rey title in 40 years at the start of April.
Muniain is eager for a new challenge, and his next preferred destination has been revealed to be Argentine giants River Plate. An agreement could be made, as his vice president Ignacio Villarroel recently addressed the speculation, as for MD.
“He is a player of the highest level, who has already shown his love for the club by running away from the training ground the night before an Athletic match to go to the Bernabeu to watch the Libertadores final.
“A player of his stature is never excluded. The market is still open, it opens on June 1, so there is no rush.”

It remains to be seen if Muniain gets his dream move to River in the summer. For now, his focus will be on Athletic Club for the remaining five games of the season.
