'A second birth': Raphael Varane reveals the next step in his career after his surprise retirement after leaving Man United
Raphael Varane has been appointed to the board of directors of Serie A side Como in his first official role since his retirement.
The Frenchman arrived at the Italian team after his departure manchester united this summer, but played just 23 minutes for the club after suffering a knee injury.
He then decided to hang up his boots in September and has now taken on a behind-the-scenes role.
On Saturday, Como announced that Varane would become a member of the board of directors and advise on “youth development, education and product innovation.”
the club statement read: “Como 1907 is pleased to announce the appointment of Raphaël Varane as a member of the board of directors.
“Recently retired from professional football, Varane will bring his experience and leadership to this new role, marking the next chapter of his career off the field.
“Varane will collaborate with Osian Roberts, Como 1907 development director, and Juliette Bolon, education program director, to support the club's youth development efforts.
“Their participation will benefit not only the players but also the community at large through educational initiatives.”
Varane to join Arsenal legend and Como shareholder Henry Thierry to help build the club off the field, while another former Premier League star, Cesc FabregasHe leads the club from the sidelines as a coach.
The 31-year-old Frenchman said: “Being a high-level athlete brings joy, sacrifice and the constant desire to push the limits. Throughout my career, I have been motivated by the desire to improve and strive for excellence.
“The transition from the field to the boardroom is not the end of my football journey; It's a new beginning that I'm looking forward to. Joining the Como board of directors allows me to continue contributing to the sport as we shape its future.”
He added: “This new stage of my career feels like a second birth, not an end. I'm not saying goodbye to football.
“Joining the Como 1907 Development Committee excites me and I look forward to being part of an ambitious project that resonates with my values.
“Together, we will invest in youth development, expand educational opportunities and innovate product solutions to realize the club's vision.”
Varane left Old Trafford after his contract expired at the end of last season.
He joined the Red Devils from real Madrid in July 2021. He had previously played for Lens, the club where he made his senior debut.
Varane also racked up 93 caps for France in his career, scoring five goals and winning the World Cup in 2018.
Como FC were promoted to the top flight last season and are currently 14th in the table.
