Rubén Amorim has said he will be judged by Manchester United's final position after Sunday's 4-0 loss to Everton It took them to 19 points, four behind Brighton in the final Champions League spot.
Two goals from Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee gave the Portuguese victory in his first home league game and he was then asked if champions league The rating is realistic.
“I'll be judged (by) where we end up. If I said no, you'll say I can't be a manchester united manager,” the 39-year-old said. “I want to be honest with our fans, so let's focus on performance, not results. Let's just focus on the next game and look at the performance. On Thursday (against Bodø/Glimt) it was 3-2, but I think we deserved more. Today it was 4-0, but I think Everton deserved (more). So let's focus on the performance.”
On Friday Amorim said that Rashford really has to want to improve. They asked him if the performance against Everton was an example. “Yes. He can do a lot,” said the manager. “He has to continue improving, he has the ability to do so and he has already shown it. But he can play much better, like the others, so it was a good performance. Tomorrow he has to recover and start thinking about Arsenal (on Wednesday).”
Zirkzee's performance came after the striker had previously struggled to regain form. “The first thing is that I need all the players to face all the games and he is one of them,” Amorim said. “I just try to help my players, put them in a good position for their characteristics.”
Amorim also explained why Zirkzee was preferred over Rasmus Højlund, who scored two goals against Bodø/Glimt. “It would have been very difficult for Rasmus to fight with Everton's two centre-backs, so we tried to push them into a position they are not so comfortable with,” he said. “Josh did a great job, he scored two goals, which is always important for confidence, and more important than that is the performance and how he fought in every situation. “It was a good day for him and our team.”
