Real Madrid is very interested in signing Alphonso Davies, and they consider him to be their starting left back for many years to come. That's why they want to sign him from Bayern Munich, and a deal seems more and more likely.
It had looked like a deal would be done this summer. Davies does not want to sign a new contract at Bayern, so the intention is to have him on the transfer list before the transfer window opens in July. It would be available on a cut-price deal, which is attractive for Real Madrid, even if they want to pay even less than the proposed price of 50-60 million euros.
As such, Real Madrid have said they have not decided to pursue a deal for Davies in the summer, unless it is financially viable for them to do so. Instead, they will try to sign a new central defender, since it is an area that they are particularly light, due to the injury of David Alaba and the imminent departure of Nacho Fernandez. The idea is still to sign Davies, but not until 2025 when he would be a free agent (if he does not renew with Bayern).
It makes sense for Real Madrid to prioritize a new central defender, especially when this would be Leny Yoro – who is their main target. It would be an excellent signing as he would be a great player for the present and the future considering he is still a teenager.
Another reason that Real Madrid are happy to give up signing Davies this summer is because of the resurrection of Ferland Mendu. The Frenchman has had a great season, and Carlo Ancelotti is very happy to continue with him as a starter for the 2024-25 campaign, with Fran Garcia as backup. In this essence, Davies would not be essential, especially when compared to the situation of the centre-back.
The Whites have to trust that Davies will not sign a new deal at Bayern, or go elsewhere this summer. If they can do that, then there is no doubt that the best strategy is to delay their arrival to go for Yoro.
Davies, like Yoro, would be a fantastic signing for Real Madrid, especially considering he is still only 23. He would be the long-term replacement for Mendy, who is 28 himself. He is probably the best candidate in the world for that left-back position, so it is risky to trust that he will stay at Bayern, and not sign a new contract.
It remains to be seen how the situation will play out in the summer. Real Madrid They could still sign Davies now, but it seems more likely they will wait, and chance their luck.
