Separate reports claim Newcastle were willing to cash in on the England international to help comply with PSR rules but wanted a Liverpool player in exchange as part of a trade agreement.

According to the Daily MailThe player Eddie Howe and the Magpies wanted was 21-year-old centre-back Jarell Quansah.

But Anfield chiefs rejected that possibility as Quansah was seen as a future star for the club, having already become a regular and reliable member of the first team.

It is also claimed that a deal is not out of the question and talks could yet be revived over a move to bring Gordon to the red half of Merseyside.

The news may surprise some seeing a former Everton player in talks over a move to their arch-rivals on the other side of Stanley Park.

But what you may not know, and what Everton fans would like to forget, is that Gordon was a Liverpool fan as a child and is still a big supporter of the Anfield club.

Gordon was even a Liverpool player at one point in his young career before being released by the Reds at the age of 11when he was later picked up by Everton.

He also remains good friends with the Liverpool midfielder and youth player. Curtis Joneshaving come through the club's Kirkby academy together, while being close to the Reds' stars. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez across the England set-up.

Gordon and Jones are friends off the field and have been teammates with the England Under-21 squad.

Gordon has not hidden this fact either.

If his reputation among Everton fans was tarnished by his £40million move to St James' Park in 2023, it was perhaps forever destroyed when he later named a Liverpool legend as his all-time footballing hero.

Anthony Gordon says he 'flew ten feet in the air' and explains how his bike accident during England training camp happened.

“Steven Gerrard was my football hero growing up,” he said. he told Gary Neville on The Overlap.

“Coming from Liverpool, he was like a god in Liverpool and he was an incredible player.”

He also named the current Reds superstar. Mohamed Salah as one of his biggest inspirations in the current game, in comments that further angered Toffees fans.

“My confidence comes from my preparation,” he told Neville. “Some footballers like to think less, just show up, play and trust their instincts. I love the mentality of putting myself in that place before I'm there.

“I saw Mo Salah talking about it and that’s where I got even more interested because I see him as an absolute machine and a winner. With people like that, you can’t go too far wrong by following what they do.”

Responding to the interview, an angry Bluenose wrote on X: “Antony Gordon takes every opportunity to tell Everton fans he supports Liverpool.”

“Apart from St James', Anfield is definitely the best,” he told Channel 4 from the England camp.

“Maybe it's because I'm from the city and grew up watching it, but I think before the game, when they sing YNWA, it's top level. Top level.”

For now, Gordon needs to face England at Euro 2024, having recovered from falling off his bike during a recovery session on Thursday.

But it seems that his dream of playing in a red jersey is not entirely ruled out.
