He eclipsed the previous Premier League record of 13 cards in the Sheffield United game with Tottenham last year.

In total, Taylor pulled out his card a whopping 16 times, including two showings to members of the Blues' technical staff.

Taylor was quick to write his book, which caused many interruptions to the flow of the game.

It has been suggested that the record number of cards will see both Bournemouth and Chelsea fined £25,000 each for receiving six or more yellow cards.

Frustration was evident from both teams throughout the match, but Chelsea held firm to overcome their opponents. Cherries Thanks to Christopher Nkunku's late goal.

But Taylor's landmark performance has now seen him omitted from the list of referees who will take charge of this weekend's round of top-flight matches.

Instead, Taylor will take on the role of fourth official for Southampton's clash with fellow promoted side Ipswich at St Mary's on Saturday.

Taylor will return to the same role on Sunday when Brighton host Nottingham Forest at the Amex Stadium.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola declined to comment on Taylor's performance but made no secret of his frustration.

“I'm not going to talk about the referee,” he said after seeing his team defeated.

“I've been talking and it's not working so I've decided to try the opposite now and see what happens.”

His rival Enzo Maresca added: “I complained about a foul on Wesley Fofana which was quite clear to me, but it can happen.

“Eight yellow cards probably because these kinds of matches are about duels and fights and this can happen.

“For me, the number of yellow cards is not a problem. It is what it is. Sometimes the game demands a certain behaviour.”

Taylor is regarded as one of the best referees in English football and was given responsibility for refereeing three matches at Euro 2024, including Spain's quarter-final win over host nation Germany.

The 45-year-old also oversaw two matches at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and is a regular in UEFA club competitions.
