Antonee Robinson reveals Mohamed Salah's advice after Fulham defender falls short on Liverpool 'bet'
Always bet on yourself… unless you play against Mohamed Salah.
Fulham Left-back Antonee Robinson found out the hard way, when a bet with friends turned into an expensive night out.
“Let's play Liverpool in the first game of the season two years ago. We tied 2-2,” Robinson said. The Athleticremembering his experience in 2022.
“I remember saying to my friends, who are big Liverpool fans and came because it was close to my birthday: 'Lads, yeah Salah score or get an assist in this game, I'll pay for dinner tonight. so I pushed myself a little more.
“And he did (score), annoyingly.”
While Robinson learned a lesson the hard way that day, he also shared a memorable moment with Salah as the match unfolded.
“I remember he said to me halfway through the game, 'How old are you?' So he didn't really know who I was. I must have been 24, 25,” he said. USMNT the star explained.
“He just nodded and continued with the game. Then after the game I asked him for his jersey, so we exchanged jerseys and we were chatting and he told me, 'You were the best player in this game, keep doing what you're doing.'” you’re doing it.’ That was very nice of them.”
Since that battle with Salah, Robinson has moved on and become one of the best full-backs in the Premier League.
He gave six assists last season, a figure that was only surpassed by three defenders: Pedro Porro, Vladimir Coufal and Kieran Trippier.
That impressive haul helped Robinson claim a personal accolade and he was named Fulham's Player of the Season for the 2023-24 campaign.
He last started 37 of his club's 38 Premier League games and has continued in similar fashion this season, featuring in every league game so far.
Fulham have made a good start to the season and sit eighth in the table as the players prepare for international duty.
Robinson will be looking forward to a busy week with the USMNT, where the former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino will take over the nation for the first time.
The United States will face Panama in a friendly match on Saturday night and last week, Robinson revealed that he already had an unexpected meeting with his new national team coach.
“Funnily enough, I ran into him at dinner the other day,” Robinson recalled.
“We had a team lunch in London and he happened to be there. He was sitting next to Harrison Reed, who used to play for him in Southamptonso he walked up to talk to him and I just walked up and said hello.
“I was chatting with him and it seems like he's really excited about it (coaching the USMNT).”
Pochettino's appointment followed the decision of fire Gregg Berhalter earlier this year, after a depressing America's Cup showing, where the USMNT was eliminated in the group stage.
