Treble winner and former Germany Head coach, Hansi Flick had been rumoured to return to Bayern Munich, but it has emerged that key players want Thomas Tuchel to stay on as Head coach.
Flick first took charge of Bayern Munich in 2019.
In his first season, Flick guided Bayern to the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and UEFA Champions League wins, completing the continental treble for the second time in the club’s history. A year later, Bayern won the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.
Flick was duly named German Football Manager of the Year by sports magazine Kicker and won the UEFA Men’s Coach of the Year Award.
In the last few days, Bayern’s hierarchy had favoured the idea of bringing him back. But now Florian Plettenberg reports that there are new developments.
Roberto De Zerbi and other candidates remain on the list of potential head coaches that Bayern are exploring.
However, key players, including Manuel Neuer, want to continue with Thomas Tuchel and have informed the board of their desires.
Last season, Tuchel masterminded a final day 2-1 victory away to Koln to win the Bundesliga in the most dramatic of circumstances, but Bayern Munich will be trophyless this season.
Tuchel navigated Bayern to within minutes of a Champions League final and have been pipped to the Bundesliga title by an extraordinary Bayer Leverkusen side but the players remain behind the former Dortmund and Chelsea coach.
ESPN have reported that Thomas Tuchel’s preference is to return to the Premier League this summer despite interest from Barcelona, but if the Bayern players get their way, we may be about to see an extraordinary U-turn.
Bayern play their final league game of the season on Saturday away to Hoffenheim.
