According to the Italian media Sports Journal, Arsenal have rekindled their interest in signing Napoli striker Victor Osimhen ahead of the transfer Deadline next week.

The Gunners have made a couple of signings in David Raya (on a permanent loan) and Riccardo Calafiori this summer and are in the spotlight. On the verge of landing Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino.

Sports Journal Now, media outlets are claiming that Arsenal are back after Osimhen and could launch a last-minute move to pry him away from Napoli. The striker has a £111m release clause in his contract signed last year, but Napoli are willing to consider a fee of £85m to consider his exit in the summer.

Possible agreement

The Gunners have had a conservative summer transfer window compared to recent years. Spending has been minimal so far but they could spring a surprise or two before the August 30 deadline. The club have been thinking about signing a star striker for months and the club could be planning a last-minute signing for Osimhen.

The 25-year-old signed a new contract in December but a gentlemen's agreement was reached which allowed him to leave at the end of the campaign. No club has been willing to pay his release clause and Napoli are now willing to lower their demands to facilitate his exit before the transfer window closes.

Osimhen had an inconsistent 2023/24 season amid short-term injuries and international commitments, but still scored 17 goals in 32 games. He scored a goal every 146 minutes for the Serie A giants. In the previous season, Osimhen was exceptional for Napoli with 31 goals in just 39 games, scoring 1 every 97 minutes.

The striker's injury record is worrying, having missed over 60 games in the last 4 years, but he is a threat to opposing defenders when fit and on form. It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will spend £85m on his signature. Osimhen has a different profile to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus and prefers to play in and around the box. Eddie Nketiah's departure could encourage the club to spend big on the Nigerian star, who is World classaccording to coach José Mourinho.
