Arsenal have confirmed the signature of Mikel Merino from Royal Societywith the 28-year-old signing a five-year deal in London. After weeks of negotiations, the Gunners have finally secured their midfield target.

Merino was linked with Atletico Madrid and Barcelona earlier this summer, as a cheap option for both, but Mikel Arteta has convinced the Emirates is the place to go, where he will be reunited with the former teammate and now captain Martin Odegaard. The deal will cost a reported 32.5 million euros with another 5 million euros available in variables.

The Euro 2024 winner leaves La Real after six successful years in Donostia-San Sebastian, having joined from Newcastle United. During his time, Real Sociedade made a historic run by qualifying for Europe every season he was there, as well as making the Champions League and winning a Copa del Rey. Merino made 242 appearances, scored 27 goals and provided 30 assists.

Arsenal will receive a physically imposing midfielder, capable of winning the ball back, but also causing problems at the other end. His ability to get into the box and his touch have been a key part of La Real's success in recent years, as well as their competitive edge.
