Arsenal reduced Liverpool's lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points with a crucial victory against manchester united at the Emirates Stadium.
After Fabian Schär's late goal Liverpool denied victory At St James' Park, Mikel Arteta's team were offered the opportunity to move a little closer to the top.
And the Gunners did not disappoint, as Jurriën Timber and William Saliba scored from corners in the second half to give the hosts a victory that kept their title hopes alive.
After a draw at Ipswich, they achieved home wins against Bodø/Glimt and Everton, Rubén Amorim warned that their unbeaten start at Old Trafford could be altered by a “storm”. However, the first period in the Emirates was a turgid affair. Gabriel Martinelli had the ball in the net after just four minutes, but Kai Havertz was clearly offside in the build-up.
A quintet lined up at the far post for one of four Arsenal corners in the first half. The chance reached the near post, but Thomas Partey was unable to get anything substantial off Declan Rice's delivery – the ball fell harmlessly wide.
Arsenal's best chance of the first half came in the 30th minute, when Martinelli deflected a blocked shot from Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Moments later, the hosts wanted a penalty when Bukayo Saka's cross hit Harry Maguire in the thigh.
Although Arsenal monopolized the chances, the best effort of the first 45 fell to United when Diogo Dalot fired his shot over David Raya's goal when he really should have tested the Spaniard.
Two minutes into the second half, Martinelli had the home fans on their feet when he found space on the left side, but the Brazilian's shot deflected off Maguire and into the arms of André Onana. Sixty seconds later, Rice's shot went past Mason Mount for a corner.
Arsenal had stated their intention and nine minutes into the second half, they made their breakthrough.
Timber leaned on Rasmus Højlund at the near post before deflecting Rice's set piece into the back of Onana's net.
Saka then made a low save from Onana and the home crowd felt blood.
The United cavalry arrived, with Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee, both benched after scoring a brace each against Everton last Sunday, introduced on the hour mark.
And the latter's first touch almost ended in his own goal when his header, from another Rice corner, crossed his own goal.
United had no response. The storm that Amorim predicted had arrived in its time. But against the run of play, the visitors were almost level in the 66th minute.
A tired Zinchenko brought down Amad Diallo, and on the next set-piece, Raya made a world-class aerial save to deflect Matthijs De Ligt's header with his left claw.
And just seven minutes later, Arsenal doubled their lead.
Partey found himself unmarked at the far post following a Saka corner, and his header deflected off Saliba's shoulder.
He scored Arsenal's 22nd goal from a corner since the start of last season. No team in the division can boast more. Arteta and the club's set-piece guru Nicolas Jover embraced on the touchline while Amorim stood with his head in his hands.
Havertz could have lost sight of the game after the restart only to fire his shot at Onana before substitute Mikel Merino's header from a Saka corner went narrowly wide.
But that didn't matter to the Gunners, who took the three points with ease and condemned Amorim to his first defeat as United manager.
