Aston Villa were held to a 0-0 draw by Leicester City at Villa Park in the Women’s Super League this afternoon.

Villa dominated proceedings but were unable to make their chances in front of goal count with Anna Patten coming the closest deep inside stoppage time.

Sabrina D’Angelo and the backline produced a solid 90-minute performance as they earnt their first league clean sheet of the new season.

Robert de Pauw made two changes to his side that fell to defeat away to Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend as he brought in Gabi Nunes for Kenza Dali and Dan Turner for the suspended Paula Tomàs.

Villa started the encounter lively and their first chance in front of goal came after only six minutes. Patten floated a terrific pass through the Leicester half and into the path of Chasity Grant. The forward carried the ball into the area, but her shot was well blocked by a recovering defender.

Jordan Nobbs pulled the trigger on a 20-yard shot on the 18th minute as she received a pass from Nunes but her effort was saved.

Missy Bo Kearns was up next to try her luck in front of goal as she found some space inside the final third, but Janina Leitzig got across to collect her strike.

Villa started the second-half with the same intensity as the first as they continued to assert their dominance on the fixture.

Substitute Adriana Leon flashed some tricky footwork down the left on the 67th minute as she skipped past her marker with ease before lifting a shot from a tight angle on goal, but her effort was deflected over the target.

Dali also come off the Villa bench looking to make on impact, and she whipped a dangerous ball deep into the area minutes later but her cross somehow evaded Lucy Staniforth and Patten.

Villa pilled on the pressure inside the closing stages as the ball firmly remained inside the Leicester half.

The side’s best chance of the game came deep into stoppage time as they came agonisingly close to sealing the three points.

Noelle Maritz’s cross was neatly brought down by Rachel Daly inside the area and the striker flicked the ball into Patten but her first-time shot from eight yards out was saved by Leitzig to ensure the points were shared.
