Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham United

Aston Villa marked their 150^th anniversary celebrations with victory as they came from behind to triumph 2-1 over West Ham United and book their place in the FA Cup fourth round.

Two goals in five minutes from Amadou Onana and Morgan Rogers sent a joyous Villa Park into raptures as Unai Emery’s side sealed their progress in dramatic fashion – on a night in which the Villans wore a special commemorative black kit in honour of our historic milestone.

Trailing to Lucas Paqueta’s early strike, substitute Onana poked home from close range in front of the Holte End to level matters in the 71^st minute.

And, almost 150 years to the day since our first-ever recorded match, Rogers converted Ollie Watkins’ low cross shortly afterwards to complete the turnaround and seal third-round victory in the world’s oldest domestic cup competition.

It ensured Villa, who also hit the woodwork through Jacob Ramsey, reached the fourth round in consecutive campaigns for the first time since 2016.

Victory extended the club’s unbeaten sequence on home soil to eight matches in all competitions, with focus now on Sunday’s draw for the next round.

Tyrone Mings captained Villa in the absence of John McGinn and Emi Martínez, as Emery made three changes from last weekend’s Premier League victory over Leicester City.

Rogers, Robin Olsen and Ian Maatsen were named in Villa’s starting XI, while there was a maiden place in the matchday 20 for Academy graduate Bradley Burrowes.

Villa Park played host to the club’s anniversary celebrations ahead of kick-off as the big screen displayed an inspirational timeline of our 150 years amid a darkened stadium, before our historic home was lit up by fireworks, flames and pyrotechnics as well as a Holte End tifo.

Although, it was West Ham who came close to spoiling the celebrations inside the opening minute as Paqueta whistled a long-range strike narrowly wide.

Yet the Brazil international made no mistake with nine minutes on the clock as he applied a low left-footed finish from 12 yards to convert Crysencio Summerville’s cross.

Villa were forced into a change midway through the first half as Ross Barkley hobbled off, replaced by Onana.

Olsen got down well to keep out Mohammed Kudus’ 20-yard strike just after the half hour, before Villa reached half-time having dominated possession but unable to force Lukasz Fabianksi into action.

A host of former players paraded around the pitch at half-time, receiving the appreciation of the Villa faithful from the stands.

With matters back underway, Rogers sent an effort over the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area in the 54^th minute, before Youri Tielemans drilled off target as Villa started to turn the screw.

Maatsen’s long-range strike then forced Fabianksi into a fine save before Villa broke down the well-organised visitors and deservedly levelled matters.

Leon Bailey’s corner found its way to Maatsen, whose low strike wasn’t held by Fabianksi and Onana was first to react and prod home the rebound from close range.

Manager Emery made a triple substitution as Ramsey, Kosta Nedeljković and Emi Buendía looked to capitalise on the momentum.

And the hosts completed the turnaround just moments later as Watkins broke down the left and delivered a low ball for Rogers to turn home from five yards.

Ramsey saw his 20-yard strike rebound off the woodwork as rampant Villa were in full flow.

Rogers then blocked well from sub and former Villan Danny Ings, who also fired over late on, as Villa sealed the triumph to extend their unbeaten run against the Hammers to five matches.

Having secured an opening-day victory at London Stadium, Villa will be looking to clinch a third win of the campaign against West Ham when they meet again in Premier League action in just two weeks’ time.
