Aston Villa 3-1 Wolves

Aston Villa staged a superb late comeback to triumph 3-1 over midlands neighbours Wolverhampton Wanderers and record a third victory in the space of a week.

Ezri Konsa put Villa ahead in the 88^th minute as he arrived at the back post to convert Youri Tielemans’ deep cross with a well-taken finish from close range, sending the home support into raptures.

And it was substitute Jhon Durán who put the seal on victory in injury time, registering his fourth goal of the season off the bench, with Morgan Rogers claiming his second assist of the afternoon.

Ollie Watkins had earlier levelled for Villa in the in the 73^rd minute, duly drawing level with Gabby Agbonlahor on 49 goal contributions at Villa Park in the Premier League era.

It was a game of two halves as midlands neighbours Wolves dominated before the break and held a half-time lead courtesy of Matheus Cunha’s strike.

But the Villans, on the back of their midweek UEFA Champions League success and last weekend’s victory from behind against Everton, hit back to claim the spoils.

Unai Emery’s in-form side have now won five of their opening six matches in all competitions this season and, for only the fourth time, have triumphed in as many as four of the club’s first five Premier League matches.

Diego Carlos returned to Villa’s starting line-up, the sole change from Tuesday’s 3-0 victory over BSC Young Boys, with manager Emery having previously kept faith with an unchanged line-up for the last three matches.

Ahead of kick-off, Villa Park united in tribute to Gary Shaw as a banner was raised in the Holte End showcasing his achievements and the stadium joined together for a moment’s applause, which was repeated in the eighth minute in honour of the club legend’s shirt number.

It was Wolves who threatened first in the 18^th minute but Emi Martínez was equal to Mario Lemina’s header from Cunha’s corner.

Yet the visitors made the breakthrough midway through the first half as Cunha pounced on a defensive error and rifled a low strike into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Carlos made a crucial interception to help send Rayan Ait-Nouri’s effort narrowly off target from eight yards.

And Martínez did well to deny Jorgen Strand Larsen after he was sent through just before the break, with Wolves enjoying the better of the first half and holding a narrow lead at the interval.

Captain John McGinn was forced off due to injury deep into injury time and he was replaced by Leon Bailey for the start of the second period, with Ian Maatsen also coming on for Lucas Digne.

With Villa struggling to break the visitors down, Emery turned to Durán and Ross Barkley just after the hour mark.

The hosts subsequently started to turn the screw and Watkins saw his header cleared to safety before Durán nodded over from six yards.

And Villa drew level as Durán won the ball in a promising position, laid it off for Rogers and he slotted through for Watkins to find the net.

Bailey sent a free-kick narrowly over the crossbar before Konsa struck with two minutes of normal time remaining to send Villa Park wild.

And, amid 13 minutes of added time, Durán converted Rogers’ ball across the six-yard area to put the seal on a remarkable fightback.
