Aston Villa fans joke that Youri Tielemans ‘can’t buy a start’ for the club, but was scoring for free with Belgium, netting twice in the first-half against England
Aston Villa fans have expressed their astonishment at Youri Tielemans‘ first-half performance for Belgium against England, after failing to shine at club level.
The Belgian star made his way from Leicester City to Villa last summer, but he has struggled to light up his new club in the same way that he did with the Foxes.
However, he put his club issues to one side by scoring twice for the visitors in the first-half of Tuesday night’s friendly at Wembley.
One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter): ‘Tielemans can’t buy a start for Villa, shock he scores 2 for Belgium against us tonight.’
‘Why can’t Tielemans play like this for Villa ffs’ wrote another frustrated supporter, while a third noted: ‘Youri Tielemans is a fantastic player. I feel Unai Emery does not appreciate his talent so much at Aston Villa’.

‘Reckon we should look at this Tielemans lad #AVFC’, joked one cheeky Villains supporter.
Another fan noted that their club came first, even when coming up against their own country, by saying ‘I celebrated Tielemans’ goal more than Toney’s. Shoot me? #avfc’.
Meanwhile an England supporter was frustrated at the defence allowing the Villa man the opportunity to strike, writing: ‘How the hell have we let Tielemans score twice? He’s bloody awful’.
While there was much focus on England’s trio of Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and Kobbie Mainoo in the centre of the park, on the night, they were outshone by Belgium’s man on the fringes at Villa.
They wrote: ‘People were dropping to their knees for this Rice – Bellingham – Mainoo midfield and they’re getting their pants pulled down by TIELEMANS’.
In their quest to finish in the Champions League spots, Aston Villa host Wolves on Saturday evening, before travelling to title-chasing Manchester City on Wednesday.
