Barcelona are monitoring the mystery central midfielder 'very, very closely'

Barcelona had identified the midfield role as one of their priorities earlier in the year, but it appears to have taken a back seat, with Dani Olmo signed for €55m plus €7m in variables , and the search for a left wing continues.

However, Sport they say the Sporting Deco director is “obsessed” with signing a midfield pivot this summer. He was interested in AC Milan's new signing Youssouf Fofana, but like Amadou Onana and Mikel Merino, they did not have the finances to move for them.

The club is happy with the performances of Marc Bernal and Marc Casado, and could wait until January to consider a move to see how they fare without one. Equally, the club cannot make it happen as things stand, due to their salary cap situation.

Deco remains intent on adding muscle and legs to the midfield though, and could be looking towards the Premier League for a loan move towards the end of the market. The most mysterious of all, they say it will depend on the sources, but Barcelona has a pivot that they monitor “very, very closely”. They also hint that the player in question may be younger, saying it would be a “gamble for the future”, and carry a certain element of risk.

The Blaugrana fans will undoubtedly take this information with a pinch of salt – they were Deco obsessed with bringing in a midfielder, it is a little discount that he spent most of his summer chasing Dani Olmo and Nico Williams. Although they claim to have made a move for Onana in advance, quite clearly he was not their top priority this summer, and if reports are to be believed, they are still looking at a left winger before a midfielder .
