Last month, Gavi made his long-awaited return to action for Barcelona. It's been almost a year since he tore his anterior cruciate ligament and tore his meniscus while playing for Spain against Georgia, but even though he's back, he's nowhere near his best.
Gavi is still far from being back to 100% match sharpness, which is why Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has only given him two starts (vs Celta Vigo and Las Palmas). He has yet to complete the full 90 minutes, and it would not be surprising if this does not happen for a long time.
Ace for ReliefBarcelona have decided that they will give Gavi as long as possible to return to full fitness, and the expectation is that this could take up to a year. However, club officials are happy that this is the case because they are well covered in midfield, largely thanks to the emergence of Marc Casado.
It is very wise to Barcelona to not take risks with Gavi as it will give him the best chance to return to the level he showed pre-ACL injury.
