Barcelona receives an inquiry about a promising defender – could consider the exit

Barcelona defends Hector Fort has been the subject of an inquiry by Alaves in recent days, with the Basque side looking to take advantage of a potentially overstocked backline. They haven't received a direct rejection, but they can't proceed with a move.

The Blaugrana and new manager Hansi Flick do not want to make concrete decisions before the German coach has had the chance to see all his options in training, and this includes Fort. Initially, the idea was that Fort would play as part of Barca Atletic this season, and train with the first team, getting opportunities throughout the season.

However, it now appears that he will not be present for Barca Atletic. Sport say he will try to convince Flick in the pre-season to keep him around, or will evaluate his options to leave on loan. Alaves looked to bolster their options at the back with Fort – he has traditionally operated as a right-back, but has shown on several occasions to be a strong left-back as well.

Next season Barcelona will have Julian Araujo returning from loan, and Alejandro Balde from injury. They are keen to hang on to Joao Cancelo, but apart from that, Fort has a good chance of being a fourth option. There is of course the possibility that Jules Kounde will spend even more time on the right.
