Barcelona submit contract offer to 17-year-old international as measures taken to clear €10m release clause
The turbulent few months of Pau Cubarsi continued on Friday as made his senior debut for Spain against Colombia. The 17-year-old defender has been in tremendous form for Barcelona of late, with his stock rising exponentially since the start of 2024.
The owners of the Catalan club are happy with Cubarsi, although there are many concerns that he could leave in the summer. A number of Premier League clubs have taken an interest, and given that his release clause is only 10 million euros, it would be very easy to be activated by one of them.
With that in mind, Barcelona are moving quickly to tie Cubarsi to a new deal, which would significantly increase his release clause. Brand they reported that a contract offer was presented, although it would only be for two additional years, and he cannot sign longer because he is under 18 years old.
The idea is for Barcelona agree a new long-term agreement – until 2030 or 2031 – with Cubarsi when he is 18 years old, like what they did with Lamine Yamal. What is certain is that they are desperate to avoid losing him for pennies as he has proven to be one of the best young defenders in Europe in recent weeks.
