- RB Leipzig Vs. Aston Villa – Tue, Dec 10th 2024, 20:00
Ross Barkley was proud of Aston Villa’s perseverance, after a battling 3-2 Champions League victory away at RB Leipzig on Tuesday evening.
Twice Villa led in the game but were pegged back by their German hosts, before Barkley’s introduction from the substitute’s bench led to him bagging the winner within just two minutes of coming on.
The match-winner praised his side’s performance which, on another day, may have yielded a more comfortable scoreline, and was pleased with another big three points in the competition.
He said: “I thought we performed really well.
“Unfortunate to concede the goals that we did, but overall, I thought we created a lot of chances and unfortunate not to come away with a comfortable win.
“But we grinded it out and won the game. That’s what we came here for, and now two more important games to come.”
After earlier goals from John McGinn and Jhon Durán, it was Barkley’s deflected effort that finally put the seal on another Champions League win, with five minutes of regular time to play.
The midfielder’s eyes are already on this weekend’s trip to Nottingham Forest, and the Villans’ two remaining Champions League outings in the league phase.
On his goal, Barkley added: “Important, we needed that win.
“It pushes us higher up the table, and we’ve done really well in the Champions League.
“I’m happy to get the goal. They all count, and I’m just made up we got the win.
“One game at a time, we’ve got to try and win the games. That’s out focus, that’s our aim, to get through, and now our eyes are on the game at the weekend.”
