Bayer Leverkusen confident that Jeremie Frimpong will stay at the club this summer

Sky Germany reports that Bayer Leverkusen are increasingly confident that Jeremie Frimpong will stay at the club this summer.

The reason why Frimpong will likely spend another season at the BayArena is that no club has yet to show any interest in the wing-back. Earlier in the summer, the 23-year-old had a release clause in his contract that was worth around €40m but has now expired

Frimpong has improved considerably under head coach Xabi Alonso. In his first full season under the former midfielder, the Dutch international scored 14 and assisted 10 in 47 games as Leverkusen won their maiden Bundesliga title and the DFB Pokal.

The likely reason that the 23-year-old has never received any concrete interest is that for Frimpong to perform he has to play in a specific position – right wing-back – and so lacks versatility. Frimpong is not defensive-minded enough to play solely as a right-back, although he has played there it is clearly not a strong point. While he is also not good enough to be an out-and-out winger, with plenty of better options in that position for clubs to sign instead of him.
