Bayern coach Tuchel explains why he believes Arsenal are no match for Bayern; This is what he said. |
Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel believes his team's extensive experience in the Champions League could give them an advantage as they prepare to face Arsenal in the quarter-finals.
Bayern, who have won the European Cup six times, visit the Gunners in the first leg on Tuesday. Arsenal's best performance in the elite competition was reaching the 2006 final.
History favors Bayern, as this is the fifth Champions League round of 16 clash between the two teams, with the Germans prevailing on the previous four occasions.
“We have more experience in the Champions League. It is different in the Champions League than in the Premier League. “We want to use that to our advantage,” Tuchel said.
“So far the Champions League has been at a high level. “We have achieved our minimum objective.”
Tuchel admitted that Bayern's overall form this season deserved criticism after some lackluster performances. They are 16 points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and were knocked out of the German Cup by third-division side Saarbruecken.
“We have been rightly criticized for our performances in the cup and league. We accept that. The consistency in our performances was not what we expected from ourselves,” he added.
Tuchel said his team faces a team in good form, with Arsenal top of the Premier League on goal difference with Liverpool.
“Arsenal is currently the best team in the Premier League, all the statistics prove it. “They are in fantastic shape,” Tuchel said.
“They are also the best team in Europe from set pieces. We're a little behind. “We know their strengths and how we want to hurt them.”
Tuchel also noted that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had changed clubs from north London.
“There has been a change of culture under Arteta. This is now bearing enormous fruit. “They are dominating the toughest league in the world,” he stated.
“They are at a very high tactical level, they are very stable against the ball.
“But we will also try to be strong. The style of the Champions League is different from that of the Premier League. But there is great credit to Arteta and the club.”
