Xabi Alonso is unlikely to accept the Bayern Munich head coach job before speaking to Liverpool, according to a German football expert.

The Spaniard is in high demand after leading Bayer Leverkusen to the cusp of their first Bundesliga title.

Leverkusen have a ten-point lead at the top of the table with ten games left and look set to end Bayern's 11-time title dominance.

“There is a gentlemen's agreement between Bayer Leverkusen and Xabi Alonso that if he has the opportunity to go to an important club, then he will be able to start negotiations.

“Bayer Leverkusen are still in the fight because his contract lasts a few more years and he has a release clause in his contract, but it can only be activated in 2025, so Leverkusen can receive a big compensation if he leaves.

“I don't think I'll say yes (to Bayern) before talking to Liverpool, however I think Bayern are in a great position at the moment.

“He knows Bayern like he knows Liverpool, he played for them and was in the starting eleven until he retired.”

The option of staying in Germany with Bayern rather than heading to Merseyside has been touted as possibly the smarter choice of the two.

Eckner believes that replacing the hugely popular and successful Klopp could weigh heavily on Alonso's shoulders at such an early stage in his promising coaching career.

“Bayern are a bit down at the moment, structurally they are still a great club, but succeeding Thomas Tuchel could be easier than being the successor of Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, he added.
