Birmingham City are looking to complete the signing of Hannover 96 defender Phil Neumann and make him their first signing of the January transfer window.

Neumann’s contract will expire at the end of the season therefore Hannover are looking to cash in before they lose him on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old has been one of the standout performers in the 2.Bundesliga this season and has been described by BILD as one of the best defenders in the division.

Other teams in the Bundesliga have been linked with securing the signature of Neumann such as Borussia Monchengladbach, Augsburg and Union Berlin however it is likely that a move to England will happen.

Neumann has made 173 appearances in Germany’s second division and has made 16 starts for Hannover this season, who currently have the best defensive record in the division, having conceded just 17 goals so far.

The German is a 6’3 centre back who can also operate as a full back if needed.

He currently has a market value of €3 million.
