Brentford agree club record deal with Leeds star Archie Gray as Premier League rivals consider hijacking transfer
Brentford appear close to signing Leeds star Archie Gray in a club record deal, talkSPORT understands.
Thomas Frank's side have agreed a £40m deal with the Yorkshire outfit, including add-ons.
A medical examination has been scheduled for Brentford for Gray, who has agreed a salary of £75,000 a week.
If they secure his services, they would break their current transfer record, which stands at £30m after agreeing a £30m deal with Belgian club Club Brugge for Brazilian striker Igor Thiago in February.
But Brentford are aware that one of their Premier League rivals could still hijack their deal, with Tottenham. known for being enthusiastic on the 18-year-old as they consider matching the offer on the table.
Meanwhile Gray is also on the radar of Chelsea, Liverpool, Aston Villa and West Ham.
As things stand, however, it is Brentford who are in pole position to land the teenager.
Gray is understood to have been happy to remain at Leeds but was impressed by Brentford's plan for him.
The England youth international made his senior debut on the opening day of the 2023/24 season.
He then played 52 games for the white team in all competitions, contributing one goal and two assists.
Gray began the campaign as a central midfielder and then went on to make the majority of his appearances at right back, demonstrating his versatility.
Leeds were hoping to secure the Premier League but missed out on automatic promotion to Leicester and Ipswich.
Despite reaching the play-off final, Daniel Farke's team were defeated by Southampton, subjecting them to at least one more year in the second division.
It is believed that Gray's departure would bring them into compliance with Profit and Sustainability rules, putting them in a strong position if Crysencio Summerville were to be the subject of any bid.
Club president Paraag Marathe did not rule out Gray leaving Elland Road last month.
He said: “It's too early to answer specific questions. I can't talk about specific players at the moment.”
“If I can paint the big picture, there are certain things we need to do and we will make sure we are fully compliant with P&S.
“There are certain concessions we have to make. We have to go back to the drawing board to determine what moves we have to make.
“Obviously, Archie is a tremendous player, but every season brings changes. “I can't comment yet, but we'll see what happens.”
As for Brentford, they will be looking to improve on last season's 16th place finish in the Premier League.
