Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler comments on England’s appointment of Thomas Tuchel

Since it was announced on Wednesday morning that Thomas Tuchel would succeed Gareth Southgate as the new England head coach, the reaction has been significantly mixed.

While there have been many praising the decision taken by the English FA—considering Tuchel’s history in knockout competitions—many have criticised the appointment, claiming that England should be looking to hire an English head coach.

With the likes of Graham Potter, Steven Gerrard, and Frank Lampard having all been suggested as possible alternatives to Tuchel, the English FA clearly believed that the 51-year-old was the most suitable appointment.

As well as this, the former Bayern Munich head coach has received backing from a current Premier League manager.

Speaking to Sky Germany, Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hürzeler explained why he sees Tuchel succeeding in the England dugout:

“Thomas Tuchel as England coach is a very exciting choice. He has already proven at the highest level that he is tactically flexible and can quickly improve players. His ability to organise teams and achieve success in a short time can be a real asset for the English national team.”

“It will be interesting to see how he applies his philosophy to the national team. I have great respect for him as a coach, and I’m eager to see how he tackles this challenge. I wish him and his team all the best.”

Tuchel’s first test as the England head coach will come in mid-November with an away to Greece before falling off against the Republic of Ireland, where only six points will do if the Three Lions hope to qualify out of League B Group 2 in the UEFA Nations League.
