Brighton have announced that they have obtained a record profit for an English club in their annual accounts.
In a historic season for the Seagulls, Brighton The accounts for 2022/23 saw them soar higher than ever as they recorded an after-tax profit of £122.8m.
The Seagulls finished sixth in the Premier League last season, which saw them enter Europe for the first time in their history, and reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
That includes a turnover of £204.5m, the highest in Brighton's history and a 17.2 per cent increase on 2021/22, where they earned £174.5m.
As well as performing brilliantly on the pitch, Brighton were equally impressive in the transfer market, where they made big profits for the likes of Marc Cucurella, Alexis Mac Allister and Yves Bissouma.
They also received compensation for Graham Potter of Chelsea but his £115m move for Moisés Caicedo and £30m move for Robert Sánchez were not included because they arrived too late for the 2022/23 deadline (June 30).
Vice-chairman and chief executive Paul Barber said: “These accounts will of course attract attention because of the headline figure.
“In a season where we made history on the pitch, we took a huge step forward in terms of the club's long-standing goal of becoming more sustainable and less reliant on Tony Bloom's incredibly generous levels of investment.
“For the first time since Tony made his first interest rate loan to the club in 2007, we have been able to make a substantial repayment, reducing the loan balance from £406.5 million to £373.3 million.
“Our profitability also means we can further improve our infrastructure with a significant multi-million pound investment in a new external fan zone which, subject to planning, will be completed in summer 2024.
“We now have a very strong platform to continue making significant progress on the field, investing in our team, and off the field, making the match day experience even more enjoyable for our fans, all of which we believe will help us keep growing.
“The dream is to compete regularly for a European place and for titles.
“We are very proud of Roberto, the work he and his staff have done and, of course, the performance levels of our team.
“As always, we are hugely grateful to Tony Bloom for his clear vision, his world-class ownership of our club and his continued financial support.
“Likewise, we are very fortunate to have a top-level board of directors, which provides us with great stability and guidance; and top-level staff in all areas of the club.
“Once again, on behalf of everyone associated with the club, I would like to thank Tony for his incredible and continued commitment.”
Meanwhile, Barber has signed a contract that extends his stay at the Amex Stadium until 2030.
