Bruno Fernandes breaks Ruud van Nistelrooy's Manchester United record and then makes a stylish gesture with Marcus Rashford
Bruno Fernandes is now Manchester United's all-time leading penalty scorer.
The Red Devils captain scored his team's penalty in the first half against Everton on Saturday.
James Tarkowski had knocked down Alejandro Garnacho in the box, giving Man United the chance to push forward.
Fernandes calmly scored in the bottom right corner, with Jordan Pickford diving the right way, but unable to put a hand in the effort.
The Man United captain is now the club's all-time leading penalty scorer, surpassing the legend Ruud van NistelrooyIt's 28 from the point.
No player has scored more penalties in the Premier League than Fernandes since arriving at Old Trafford in 2020, with the Portuguese international scoring 17 in total.
Much to the frustration of Everton boss Sean DycheGarnacho then won another penalty thanks to a strong challenge from Ben Godfrey.
“It's going at such a pace that the defender made a mistake,” talkSPORT commentator Alan Pardew he said live from Old Trafford.
“You shouldn't make any kind of challenge there, but that doesn't take anything away from Garnacho, it's a brilliant run and skill to win that penalty.”
Instead of taking the opportunity to extend his record, Fernandes gave the ball to Mark Rashford who converted beyond Pickford.
He is now Man United's top scorer this season with seven goals.
Rooney – who admitted that there was little sympathy for Rashford's struggles this season before the game – said at half-time: “I would love to see Marcus take over as penalty taker, I know he scored the second, but when you're a goalscorer all you want to do is score.
“Marcus is a very good penalty taker and when you are a scorer you just want to take advantage of every opportunity (to score).
“You should have one, not two penalty takers. When I played we had ronaldoVan Nistelrooy and I later.
“I just want to see Marcus score goals, maybe I'm biased.”
Garnacho also made history on Sunday. He is now also the first Man United player to win two penalties in the same Premier League match.
It is also the first time the Red Devils have had two different penalty scorers in the first half of a Premier League match.
Erik ten Hag's team remain in sixth place, three points behind fifth-placed Tottenham, although Spurs have two games in hand.
