In this weekly feature, hosts of the Gegenpressing podcast Stefan Bienkowski and Manu Veth face off with their predictions for the forthcoming Bundesliga matchday fixtures. It’s three points for a correct score and one point for a correct result. Who will come out on top at the end of the season?
Manu’s Game of the Week: Bayer Leverkusen vs Werder Bremen
My match of the week is Bayer Leverkusen versus Werder Bremen. I think the historic moment speaks for itself. For the first time in over a decade the Bundesliga will have a title holder not name Bayern Munich and it could finally be official on Sunday. Ultimately, I think Leverkusen will do the bare minimum to win this match. After all, the focus will now switch to Europe where they hammered West Ham on Thursday. But even with the focus switched, this is the best club team in Europe and that’s going to be enough to beat Werder and wrap up the first of potentially three titles.
Manu’s Predictions:
Augsburg 1-1 Union Berlin; Bayern Munich 3-1 FC Köln; RB Leipzig 2-0 Wolfsburg; Mainz 2-1 Hoffenheim; Gladbach 1-2 Borussia Dortmund; Bochum 1-2 Heidenheim; Stuttgart 2-1 Eintracht Frankfurt; Darmstadt 0-2 Freiburg; Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Werder Bremen.
Stefan’s Game of the Week: Stuttgart vs Eintracht Frankfurt
My game of the weekend has to be Eintracht Frankfurt’s trip to Stuttgart. Sebastian Hoeneß’s side really seem to have the bit between their teeth in their quest to nab a late second-place finish and three points against Frankfurt should go a long way to helping that cause. However, Dino Toppmöller’s side are no slouches and have enjoyed an impressive record at the old Mercedes Benz Arena that goes all the way back to February 2018. Either way, this tie is looking like it’ll be a fantastic, competitive match that neutrals should enjoy immensely.
Stefan’s Predictions:
Augsburg 2-2 Union Berlin; Bayern Munich 2-0 FC Köln; Leipzig 2-1 Wolfsburg; Mainz 2-2 Hoffenheim; Gladbach 1-1 Borussia Dortmund; Bochum 1-2 Heidenheim; Stuttgart 2-1 Eintracht Frankfurt; Darmstadt 0-2 Freiburg; Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 Werder Bremen.
Scores after MD28: Manu – 171, Stefan – 187
