Bundesliga teams recorded three wins and two defeats on the first matchday of the new Champions League season, in its new format.

Bayern Munich kicked off proceedings with an emphatic 9-2 win against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday on a night in which Harry Kane set a new record, becoming the leading English goalscorer in European competitions with 33 goals, surpassing Wayne Rooney.

VfB Stuttgart also returned to the Champions League for the first time since the 2009/10 campaign and put up a fight against Real Madrid Santiago Bernabéu. Although suffering a 3-1 defeat, Deniz Undav managed to get on the scoresheet.

On Wednesday, Borussia Dortmund were made to work for their 3-0 win against Club Brugge. The Belgian side will certainly be disappointed not to have picked up a result against Die Schwarzgelben, who relied on Jamie Gittens to push the German side over the line with a brace, before Serhou Guirassy added a third.

Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen also got off to a winning start and were clinical in Rotterdam with four goals in one half against Feyenoord. Florian Wirtz scored a brace on his Champions League debut, while in the other game on Thursday night, RB Leipzig suffered a late defeat against Atletico Madrid despite leading until the final minute.

A record night in the Champions League for Bundesliga teams

As noted by Opta, the 18 goals scored by Bundesliga teams is a record for German clubs on a single matchday. Perhaps helped by the fact that there’s five Bundesliga teams competing in the European competition this season, it’s still an impressive feat from Germany’s finest.
