Can Bayern Munich catch Bayer Leverkusen?

Unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen lead Bayern Munich by eight points as we head into matchday 24, but can the Rekordmeister catch Xabi Alonso’s side, who are one of the best performing teams in Europe this season.

With Thomas Tuchel and Bayern Munich recently announcing that they will part ways at the end of the season, it’s perhaps taken some of the pressure of Tuchel and his players, and that can only be a good thing. Prior to Bayern Munich’s dramatic stoppage time win against RB Leipzig on Saturday, Harry Kane and Co. were 11 points behind Leverkusen. A defeat against Leipzig in the Topspiel would have surely put an end to their chances of lifting the Meisterschale.

But as if often the case at Bayern Munich, they have the experience and know-how. Just like last season, when they won the Bundesliga on the final day with virtually the last kick via Jamal Musiala, Bayern again showcased their winning mentality. With Manuel Neuer, Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich and Kane, Bayern have players that have played at the highest level, and know what it takes to win.

But Leverkusen too have shown that this season with several late goals. Not only that, Bayern’s injury list continues to grow with Sacha Boey, Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry and more all sidelined, Bayer are welcoming back Exequiel Palacios following a five week lay-off, while Victor Boniface is also expected to return before the end of the season.

Gnabry and Alphonso Davies could make their return to the squad around the international break, which would give Bayern Munich a huge boost heading into the final stages of the season.

Not only that. They have Kane. With 27 Bundesliga goals this season, the Englishman guarantees goals. The 30-year-old continues to break records and with Kane in the lineup, Bayern will always have a chance.

With Bayer Leverkusen taking four points off Bayern Munich with a 2-2 draw and a 3-0 win, Bayern have made it difficult for themselves. With Alonso’s Leverkusen showing no sign of letting up either, it’s difficult to see how Bayern can make up an eight point gap. But you can never write off the Rekordmeister.
