Moisés Caicedo may finally be putting his record transfer fee behind him as Chelsea's new leader.
That's at least according to the talkSPORT presenter. Jason Cundywho was very impressed with the Ecuadorian's prominence under the orders of Enzo Maresca.
Caicedo has had a good start to the season for a Chelsea team that finally appears to be making progress for the first time since the Clearlake-Boehly consortium acquired the club in 2022.
Playing in 12 of a possible 16 games, the 23-year-old is perhaps the second name on the team's roster after Cole Palmerand capped off a great run with his first goal of the campaign in a 1-1 draw at manchester united.
Former Chelsea defender Cundy is amazed by what he has seen and believes Caicedo even has a chance of being the best midfielder when Rodri is not fit.
speaking in Inside ChelseaHe explained: “He is the legs, the energy. He is a bit like N'Golo Kante, he closes spaces and presses the high field.
“People think Kanté was a defensive midfielder, but he wasn't. He was a box-to-box midfielder and what he does in the zone where he protects the back four and goes and fights with Romeo LaviaIt's extraordinary.
“The energy levels, the corner they almost scored from at the end, him chasing past our back four, his lungs, energy and quality on the ball, he could go on and be Cheslea's player of the season.”
Caicedo has started Chelsea's last three games alongside Lavia in midfield and, despite being the most expensive player in British history at £115m, the former Brighton player is diverting attention elsewhere.
Commenting on Maresca's new first-choice partner, Cundy believes his form is bad news for £105m Enzo Fernandez.
“No one talks about the price anymore, they do it with Enzo Fernández but not with him,” he said.
“Maresca has to play with both. Caicedo is now beginning to emerge as one of those leaders in the field and that is very important.
“He plays like a captain and looks like a captain, that's something this squad has missed since (César) Azpilicueta, (Mateo) Kovacic and (Olivier) Giroud left.
“He and Lavia are the pivot, they combine very well, Fernández has a real problem now and will not start against Arsenal.
“Name two best midfielders, and if there is one, there aren't many more. “I can't think of two better midfielders in the Premier League than those two.”
