Chelsea star Ben Chilwell insists winning the Carabao Cup against Liverpool would be bigger than Champions League success.
Ben Chilwell may have won the Champions League but he has declared Carabao Cup glory would be a greater achievement for Chelsea..
The 27-year-old started in the Champions League Final 2021where the Blues surprised Manchester City to establish themselves as a club legend.
However, the club has struggled for consistency over the previous two seasons, having undergone a major transformation since its Acquisition for £4.25 billion in 2022.
With Reece James injured, the 19-cap England international will captain the west Londoners in Sunday's final at Wembley against Premier League leaders Liverpool. live on talkSPORT.
AND chilwell has sensationally claimed that victory will mean more than just winning club football's biggest prize.
The former Leicester left-back said: “The prestige of the Champions League is obviously greater, but I would say this is possibly more important in terms of where the club is now.
“With the group we have now, obviously it's such a young group, such a new group, where there have been ups and downs this season.
“To achieve this as a team, as a staff and with the fans, would be huge for the club and would possibly be bigger than the Champions League, not in prestige.
“But in the way we want the club to go and the direction we want it to go.”
Chelsea have fought against Jurgen Klopp's lately, with their last win against the Merseyside side coming in May 2021.
Since then, they have lost in both the Carabao and FA Cup finals, with Liverpool prevailing on penalties in both tournaments in 2022.
And in the recent meeting between the two clubs last month, the Reds went down to a 4-1 victory at Anfield.
Chilwell has insisted that he and his teammates are out for revenge, as Mauricio Pochettino seeks to win his first trophy in English football.
He commented: “This is huge for many reasons. Firstly, the rival and the fact that we have lost twice against them in two cup finals.
“We want revenge. Secondly, it is an important trophy. Everyone wants to win important trophies. It's a cup final at Wembley.
“For me there is nothing bigger than a cup final at Wembley.
“So for the team as a whole, if we can get that first trophy as a team, it will give us the confidence, drive and hunger to achieve more.”
As well as two cup final defeats to Liverpool, Chilwell also lost in the 2021 FA Cup to the Foxes, courtesy of Youri Tielemans' impressive effort.
And he was also part of the Three Lions squad that lost to Italy in the final of Euro 2020 at the Casa del Fútbol.
For Chilwell's sake, he is desperate to finally get gold at Wembley, and with Chelsea in 10th place, victory against Liverpool would secure the Europa Conference League.
In what would be the icing on the cake for Chilwell, he said: “Everyone wants to get involved in European football.
“With the young team we have now, many players have not played European football.
“It is another step to grow as a team and experience not only playing in Europe but also the experience of playing 50-55 games per season, which we want to do.
“The main objective on Sunday is to win and the positive side of that victory is that we will also have European football.”
