Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has played down a statement from Raheem Sterling's representatives saying they wanted “clarity” over the winger's future at the club after he was not substituted against Manchester City. The Italian said Sterling's omission in the 2-0 Premier League defeat was nothing more than a “technical decision”

Maresca also defended his decision to give midfielder Enzo Fernandez the captain's armband for the opening game of the Premier League season, despite the Argentina international being filmed singing a racist chant during pre-season. He called Chelsea's performance at Stamford Bridge “pretty good” as the hosts put City under pressure before Mateo Kovacic sealed victory late on.
